Venice Film Festival - Day 8

So far this has been an interesting trip.... My journey into work this morning was spiced up with a bit of flooding.... kept the cameras high and dry and made this video. :)

Other cool things in the last couple days, I've actually managed to go to a couple film screenings (which is very unusual for me while working a festival!).
The first one I saw was Essential Killing..... Vincent Gallo stars... very cool movie... would definitely recommend. Theres been so many movies coming out about us troops in Afghanistan, and all these 'evil' Taliban people...... Essential Killing gives a refreshing different perspective without trying to make a huge political statement. just a good film.... go see it.

The film I watched in my photocall/premeire break today was Tsumentai Nattaigyo (which translates to 'Cold Fish').... Japanese horror film from cult director Shion Sono. based on a true story of Japanese serial killers.... its a story of two tropical fish shop owners who become friends and join forces until it surfaces that one of the men is not what he seems. it goes on--plot thickens--- and turns into one of the more disturbing films i have ever seen.....
Sexually violent... very gory... people regularly being dismembered...rape.. with a tad of twisted comedy thrown in too.
A guy sitting a row in front of me actually vomited.
This film just made me think back to the reading I did for my dissertation at LCF...... One essay in particular on 'Wound Culture'.... (cant remember who wrote it, but if anyone's interested shoot me an email and i'll try to find it.)
Anyways, cant say i'll be watching that movie again in a hurry.

Life Ball 2010

Spent the last few days in Vienna, Austria photographing the Life Ball 2010.
(for those of you who don't know, the Life Ball is a glitzy AIDS charity event characterized by its quirky take on a traditional Viennese ball.)

An amazing venue...  Held outside between the Vienna City Hall and the parliment building on a giant red carpet .... watched the breathtaking opening with fantastic dancers/operettas/orchestras.... performers in massive dresses being dropped into the stage by a crane..... and a red carpet full of attendees in amazing costumes, all with the common theme of 'Earth'.

Lots of celebrities also attend the event, with Whoopie Goldburg singing in full costume during one of the performances.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided to open the heavens and the Austrian authorities ordered the outdoor event to be closed as a huge storm approached.
3/4 of the event didn't get the chance to take place. Such a shame!

Here are some of the photos....

sex and the city 2 & Black Eyed Peas

The Sex and the City 2 premiere had a really good turn out.... all the stars, plus Kylie Minogue, peaches, Daisy Lowe, and loads more...

The people in the office blocks circling Leicester square weren't getting any work done with all the excitement outside. :)

Ran to the O2 arena straight after to shoot the Black Eyed Peas gig... was quite fabulous to watch them perform from the pit... and got some nice pics too.

Unfortunately cant post any photos of the band on here as they're under tight rules, but heres a photo of the dancers that came on in between songs dressed speakers..... pretty cool.

paparazzi

ok, so I am by no means a paparazzi, but when an opportunity plops in your lap, it would be silly not to snap away.

Here's my photos of Peter Andre and his mystery brunette that I snapped in Monte Carlo.

(In my defense, I was on the beach terrace first! :) haha

Last day of Cannes

been a very naughty blogger and skipped a few days in all of the busyness.

Have had some great times and acquired many tales to tell.... stayed at the same lovely hotel as J-Lo, sold some big photo sets, met lovely people old friends and new, and have eaten at some of the nicest restaurants. My french is even starting to improve.... well...  un petit peu. :)

Off to photograph the last red carpet and closing ceremony.... I wonder who will win the Palm d'Or!

My mom emailed me this photo this morning.... it was in the saturday telegraph. (you can see me on the right)

Monte Carlo

The Monte Carlo train station announcement bell sounds like the beginning of the X-files theme tune.

I eventually found my way round the maze of streets & arrived at the Salle des Palmiers in the Monte Carlo Sporting Club.. They weren't ready for me yet so I went to sit with a drink on the adjacent hotel's private beach.... Watched someone land their helicopter on their yacht just off the coast, then get into their matching mini boat to come to the shore of the hotel.... so this is how the other half live!

I was shortly joined on the beachside by Peter Andre and friends. Quite a contrast of hotel residents.

Another day in Monte Carlo tomorrow for the World Music Awards... The red carpet madness is reportedly Cannes times 10.... will be interesting!

Monaco in the morning

Just got a job in Monte Carlo photographing the World Music Awards.... and have to leave in the morning.
Its being held in the Monte Carlo Sporting Club & has a strict dress code of cocktail attire.... should be interesting!

Just had an amazing dinner in a beautiful little restaurant in the hills behind the Croisette.... it cost more than a week of groceries back home, but was a worthwhile treat.... really really good!

Now just have to find a hotel in Monte Carlo that is under 300euros.... going to be tricky!

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

I shot this photo on my iphone this morning while i was walking to the Palais des Festivals, they were dressed up to promote their film... something about zombie killer chicks. :)

Always lots of weird and wonderful things to see.

'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' is the big event today.... Shot Michael Douglas, Carey Mulligan, Oliver Stone, Josh Brolin and Shia Labeouf...
Will get them again on the red carpet tonight.... hoping Carey will wear a
statement dress!

too tired to expand on that, but yes had to jump some walls today.... not always a glamourous job!

got some photos in the daily mail & few other places... so not too shabby!
todays celebs were: russell crowe, cate blanchett, kate beckinsale, tim burton, salma hayek, helen mirren, eva longoria.... just to name a few...

just spotted myself in this shot of Kate Beckinsale.... :) haha

St. Margarite

sunny day started with grocery shopping and a walk down the Croisette... I've never seen so many yachts!

hopped on a ferry to St. Margarite Island in the afternoon... long forest walks and a very old fort which used to imprison the man in the iron mask and also the inventor of the paddle boat. :) Little lizards ran around everywhere!
We were on the other side of the island, paddling on the beach when we realized the last boat of the day was about to leave.... a panicked dash through the forest and down the coast was rewarded by a waiting ferry. phew!

just noticed that i really caught the sun today... looking a bit lobster like... or homard should i say (new word learned today at lunch --- La bisque de homard)

Cannes Cannes

Arrived in Cannes, two days to go before I need to markup for the film festival.
Staying in Cannes La Bocca.. a 30 min walk along the cost from the centre of Cannes.

Today I ventured to St. Honorat by boat... beautiful monastic island covered in vineyards, with the monks selling thier own wines. This island is where St. Patrick learned to be a priest.
Very calm and spiritual feeling.

All of the white tent tops of the film festival line the Croisette.
